Unexpected error on server associating the workflow

by Mark Deraeve 5. July 2008 22:04

Ever had this nice error:

I first got this error when I was migrating the workflow from development to live. I just copied the workflow and linked the list and items correctly. When I press finish it saves the changes but cannot associate the workflow with the list. The problem was because it was the first workflow on the site, there was no folder created for the workflows. A copy paste, copied the workflow in the root directory. Look for the difference in the pictures below!

This doesn't work:

This works:

In both pictures you will find a workflow folder, this was because I had taken the screen after the folder was created. But I dragged the workflow to the root and the same problem arrose. So the solution is to put the workflow in the correct workflow folder. If it does not exists yet:create a dummy workflow and the system will create the workflow folder for you. Then drag your workflow in this folder and now it can associate the workflow with the list. Remove the dummy workflow.

Hi,

I've got the same problem as you had, only that all workflows were in the right folder. I tried two migration techniques - Import/Export and Backup/Restore, but neither method seemed to yield results. Any ideas as to what I might do/check to amend this problem?

Thanks.

Kind regards,
Neil.

I'm having the same issues as well, some of my workflows have imported (restored) correctly but some have the error you mentioned very strange and to date still have not found an answer.
I did how notice that when i attempted an import WSS3 said i had a missmatch with Sharepoint version

Have you tried the above solution?
Copy your workflow,
rename it correct and then link it again to the list.
Even if the workflow folder exists, you should try to copy paste the workflow that is giving the problems.
You can use this link to correctly rename your workflow:

THANK YOU Smile
Once I copied-pasted the old file from environment A to env. B, I didn't get the error any more. I didn't have to change the name ofcourse.

I only got this error when I use "publish selected file".

So what is the difference between "hand copy/pase" a file VS "publishing the file"?
Why do I get error when I use "publishing the file"?
Isn't it the same thing???!!!!!

Thank you again.

The difficulty utilizing Plr articles is most people usually do not use it correctly.  People ought to either apply it for getting ideas for things to write about or perhaps thoroughly re-write it or spin it and then simply place his or her own identify on it.

On a side note, has anyone seen the Apple stock over the past 3-4 months.  With holidays upon us it may be worth another look before the next earnings report.

About Mark Deraeve

I started as a VB6 developer, programming all kinds of applications. I also got involved in the development of a e-market in ASP.

When .Net was introduced, I had the privilege to start in a team of professionals and develop a framework. I learned a lot and started to work as a c#.Net consultant from then on.

After 2 years I also got the chance to work for several months with Sharepoint. Sharepoint kept chasing me all the years after and when the product got more and more mature I started to love it. Now Sharepoint is a somewhat daily occupation for me. I implemented a large quality document management system at PMRL being to only developper/technical analyst. Working close togehter with the QA department we succeeded in making and improving a very good Quality document management system. Its used up until this day.

I worked for 6 years as a .Net consultant for 2 of the largest consultancy companies in Belgium. Mainly I worked as a Sharepoint engineer, but also .Net expert and several ASP.Net and Windows applications. One of my last projects with the consultancy was creating a custom LIMS system. This was a succes and the customer (Phillip Morris) asked me to stay and help to expand and maintain this LIMS. I had great years in this company. There was a focus on innovation and a lot of opportunities for improving and developping new IS systems. Apart from several small projects I furter developped the custom LIMS system, created a SOP library based on Sharepoint and a web based Skill matrix system to handle the skills of the employees in the company.

Last I was involved in transferring the LIMS to a new lab in Singapore. This was done in a short time frame. The deployment was again a success and it passed the GLP inspection tests. I learned a lot from the Quality engineers about validation of computerized systems.

This year, new challenges are ahaed, I changed jobs. but still working with .Net and MS Sharepoint. The new company I'm working now is Galvapower. I find a great challenge and a good diversity in this company. I will be working mainly with .NET but also some VBA and ABAB will be on my dish.
